Court rules for LGBT rights group in Zimbabwe
by Colin Stewart
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) today won a court case that was aimed at shutting it down.
Magistrate
Don Ndirowei ruled that GALZ was exempt from the registration
requirement that the prosecution had accused it of ignoring.
"This
is yet another legal victory that vindicates GALZ work of representing
and protecting the rights and interests of lesbians, gays, bisexuals,
transgender and Intersex people in Zimbabwe," the group said.
The
prosecution had claimed that Martha Tholanah, GALZ chairperson, knew
that the organization was not registered and “unlawfully took part in
the management of the organisation by gathering its members and
continued to carry out activities while engaging in gays and lesbians
activities.”
