Gays Have Fashion, Yes We Do! (And We Have Lots Of Money Too)…
by Sly
We
as gay men love to look our best at any given moment. Whether it's
going to the hottest club or buying orange juice at the supermarket, we
always are dressed to the heavens...
Or
do we? That's what one of the stereotypes that is commonly associated
with gay men. We are fashion obsessed, materialistic beings that are
only focused on obtaining the finer things in life. But in reality we
know that isn't always true. In fact, when we look at the entire scope
of demographics in this community, you'll see that most of us are
fiscally sound like most other Americans that are recovering through a
major recession period. Where does the motion that we're swimming in
money with endless mounds of disposable income? Well there's several
thoughts to that. Here's more:
The Williams Institute recently released an update on their 2009 report on poverty within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. There's a notion and debate about the queer community being wealthy and affluent, but the Institute's findings proved that not to be true.HuffPost Live host Ricky Camilleri points to television shows and movies such as "The L Word," "The Birdcage," and "Queer As Folk" as examples of how gays and lesbians portrayed in the media as upper class and fashionable.
The discussion also touched on demographics like race, job that come into play. Popular beliefs of exceedingly wealthy men has been a prominent image to affluent gay men. The discussion also implies how truly diverse we are so it's always good to remind ourselves how many similarities we have each other.
