If anyone is actually surprised by this one, they really haven’t been paying attention. Texas Governor Rick Perry has vetoed a bill that would have prevented wage discrimination against women. In fact, it is rather surprising that the bill even made it to his desk to be vetoed.
An aide to state Representative Senfronia Thompson (D) told reporters that Perry’s office had called on Friday to let her office know that the bill had been vetoed. Thompson was the author of the bill. A similar call went to State Senator Wendy Davis (D). She introduced it to the Senate.
Thompson’s office said that the representative was “deeply disappointed” and “heartbroken”. She stated “Women will still have to struggle to receive their equal pay for their equal work.”
The bill would have made it easier for women to sue their employers over wage discrimination.
Perry’s office claims that he objected to the legislation because the Federal Government already had a similar law (The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act) in place; however, he is known to oppose that particular piece of legislation along with most Republicans.
Thompson’s legislation, HB950, would have allowed the parties involved to work out the issue in state court rather than federal courts. Often times, taking a case to the Federal courts is more costly and more time consuming than doing it through the state courts.
Unfortunately, Republicans have a long history of being anti-women.
