White House staff would urge veto of defense bill over anti-gay language
Senior
White House advisers would recommend a veto of the National Defense
Authorization Act if it is presented to President Barack Obama in its
current form, partly due to an amendment that they say would hinder the
repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell." The amendment in question was
proposed by Rep. John Fleming, R-La., and stipulates that the military
must accommodate "actions and speech" that reflect the "conscience,
moral principles, or religious beliefs of the member." Opponents say the
language would encourage discrimination against gay and lesbian troops. Metro Weekly (Washington, D.C.)/Poliglot blog
