The
graves of up to 50 Danish Muslims were vandalized late on Friday and
some politicians are accusing the police of not taking it seriously.
On Saturday morning Danish Muslims woke up to the news that the Muslim cemetery in Brøndby has been vandalised. More than 50 tombs have been heavily vandalised and destroyed. Many graves were beyond recognition while others were systematically smashed and tombs have been urinated on.
Muslims rushed to the burial site to see if their loved one’s grave has been vandalised. The faces of the survivors, mothers, siblings and friends are filled with tears while they gather the pieces of the headstone where their loved ones’ names and last memories are inscribed.
A Muslim cemetery in the western Copenhagen suburb of Brøndby was vandalized late on Friday, Copenhagen Vestegn Police confirmed to various media outlets on Saturday.
According to police spokesman Kim Madsen, some 50 graves were vandalized and numerous tombstones were destroyed and strewn over the burial grounds.
“We don’t consider this to be something aimed at the Muslim community, there isn’t anything to indicate that. It looks like a prank in which someone went out there and just knocked them down,” Kim Madsen told Ekstra Bladet.
Copenhagen Vestegn Police said they were looking for witnesses that could give them more information, but some politicians questioned the police reaction.
“A Muslim cemetery is vandalized but police don’t see it as politically motivated? Why?” Socialist People’s Party MP Özlem Cekic wrote on Twitter.
