Glenn Beck Now Supports Gay Rights and GLAAD, Because Russia, Not America
by Nick Goroff
The
LGBTQ community has found a curious ally in their stand against the
Russian government's egregious violations of human rights, regarding the
treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the
country, in the form of conservative commentator and part-time
conspiracy theory purveyor Glenn Beck.
Beck,
who is commonly known for his repeated segments regarding FEMA
concentration camp conspiracies and postulations regarding a suspected
global liberal socialist plot to destroy America, joined CNN's S.E. Cupp
for an hour-long discussion last week, in which he stated, to the
surprise of many, "I will stand with GLAAD (the Gay and Lesbian Alliance
Against Discrimination) against Russia's 'hetero-fascism."
The
comments came following a discussion of the recent controversies
surrounding Fox News host Megyn Kelly's assertion that Santa Claus and
Jesus were white, as well as the openly homophobic comments made by Duck
Dynasty star Phil Robertson.
Stating
that he believed the stories were non-issues to begin with, Beck
asserted that the time spent by media covering the controversies would
have been better spent exposing the gross and widespread anti-LGBT
rhetoric commonly espoused by Russian officials and media personalities,
pointing out:
[box

that homosexuals should be put into the ovens alive. I didn't think you
could make the Holocaust worse but he’s like 'Why the gas chamber? That
seems a little too humane. Let’s put them alive in the ovens..."
adding, "I will stand with anybody who will stand up and say that’s
crazy. That’s dangerous. That’s hetero-fascism. That’s what that is. And
we’re talking about Duck Dynasty. Really? Really?”[/box]
Though
sensible, the comments come as a surprise from the man who openly
supported Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachmann, who are among the two
most anti-gay politicians on the public stage. Frequently calling
himself a libertarian, it does fall within the ideological purview of
his stated political philosophy to support individual rights in this
manner, however as recently as 2010, while attempting to rebrand himself
and his show with a more spiritual, religious tone, Beck was slammed by some media outlets for his close ties to ardently anti-gay, anti-equality personalities, such as John Hagee and Sarah Palin.
With
the controversy surrounding the upcoming Sochi winter Olympic games and
Russia's increasingly brutal crackdown on LGBTQ people, perhaps there
is room for even the most broken clock to be right, if only twice a day.
