India's deputy consul general in New York has been indicted by a grand jury on federal charges of visa fraud

India's deputy consul general in New York has been indicted by a grand jury on federal charges of visa fraud and making false statements in connection with allegations that she lied on a visa application for her former housekeeper, according the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In a letter to U.S. District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin, federal prosecutors said Devyani Khobragade will not be arraigned on the charges at this time; she left the United States on Thursday.

Khobragade's arrest on December 12 outside her daughter's school, her detention in a cell with other women and her having been subjected to a strip search raised diplomatic hackles in New Delhi.
