Phil Robertson’s Son Defends His Father’s ‘Marry A Fifteen Year Old’ Comments
by John Prager
Phil
Robertson has been speaking the Biblical "truth" quite a lot (as
right-wing media has portrayed it) through his lifetime--and the only
son that didn't step into a phone booth, ditch the khakis, and suit up
in a fauxbilly camouflage
and beard combo to appeal to viewers has stepped up to the plate to
defend his father's recently unearthed comments that it's important to go out and bag yourself a fifteen or sixteen year old tah marry (this
advice is from personal experience, as he began dating his now-wife
when she was 14 and, he a legal adult. They married when she was
16...and he was still an adult).
Duck Dad's oldest son, Pastor Alan Robertson, ignored most of the above in an interview with The Christian Post (CP).
Alan the Unbearded did his best to justify his father's remarks
regarding marrying children by amending the meaning to simply be
"marry young."
"Honestly,
dad, as well as the rest of us, we really try early on in our kids'
lives to teach them about the importance of finding the right person
that you can grow spiritually with," said Alan. "So that may begin
early, or it might not happen until you're older, but at the same time,
most of us got married pretty young, in our teenage years."
Alan
says that the family has been very supportive of the Duck Dynasty
patriarch. "We basically stood with dad, and I think he has the right to
express his biblical views, as well as his opinions. Dad is a good,
solid Bible man, and so are the rest of us. His views of sharing that
haven't changed and ours haven't either. The biblical message is not
always a popular message. There have been many people throughout history
who've stood up for God and said what God needed them to say, and it
didn't always mean they were popular because of it."
Robertson's
"Biblical message" has been drawing a lot of ire lately. Most recently,
Phil explained to GQ that (just like it says in the Bible) "the vagina is more desirable than a man's anus," and that African Americans were happier pre-civil rights.
His
earlier nuggets of wisdom during his speeches have included recently
uncovered (additional) anti-LGBT hate speech in a 2009 Pennsylvania
sermon, in which he states (you know, like the Bible says) that gay
people "invent ways of doing evil," as they are "full of murder, envy strife and hatred."
In a 2008 sermon, it seems as though Robertson may be embellishing a bit when it comes to what the Bible says, as he likened Muslims and the Chinese, and Communists to Nazis,
saying all four groups "want to conquer the world," "rejected Jesus"
(who is one of the most quoted prophets in the Quran), and are "famous
for murder."
He must be quoting from Lebigotus. We'd like to see his Bible.
Alan
maintains that his father is simply a victim of society's unwillingness
to accept the Biblical "wisdom" his father has to offer (like 'Marry a
15 year old'). "We realize that, to be Christians, and to do what God
has called us to do, it means you're going to rub up against people,"
added Alan. "And sometimes that's great when people see that and accept
the Lord. Or, when they don't, it's not always so pleasant. So, there's
no promise that standing up for Christ is going to be an easy
experience."
Like all fake Christians, Alan simply fails to recognize the malice in his father's words and asserts that daddy is a martyr.
Pastor
Alan used his father and mother's relationship as an example of
marrying young and sticking together because that's what he feels God
wants--though CP carefully omits their respective ages while listing the (more acceptable) ages at which all children married--as well as the ages of their spouses.
